Buyer Guide

What amplifier do I need?

The amplifiers on the Customize tab are arranged in order of coverage area. Simply select the amplifier that matches the size of the area you need to cover. The first 4 amplifiers are all dual band amplifiers, which cover voice and 3G on all US networks except Nextel and T-Mobile 3G (T-Mobile voice is covered). We then have a few specialist amps that cover these networks separately.

What external antenna do I need?

Yagi antennas are directional, which means that they point towards the area of strongest signal. Setting up a yagi antenna takes a little bit more time, as the antenna has to be slowly rotated until you get the best signal increase. The advantage is that a yagi antenna will give you much better signal reception than a pole style antenna. Yagi antennas should be used if you are boosting signal for a single network, or for several networks where you know they share a cell tower. Otherwise use a pole style antenna, which picks up signal from all directions.

Is the Wilson repeater compatible with my cellular services?

The 4 dual band amplifiers boost signal on both the Cellular and PCS bands. This makes them compatible with almost all US and Canadian carriers, including (but not limited to) AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint, Tracfone, MetroPCS, US Cellular, Boost Mobile,Tracfone, Virgin Mobile, Cricket, Alltel, Bell Mobility, Fido, Rogers, and Tell Mobility. It is not compatible with 4G networks, iDEN carriers such as Nextel, SouthernLinc, MiKE, and with T-Mobile 3G Data signals. We have separate dedicated amplifiers for Verizon 4G, iDEN and T-Mobile 3G/4G.

What internal antenna do I need?

There are 2 internal antennas to choose from. The 301121 mounts to the ceiling and sends signal out in all directions. It should be placed in the center of the area you need to cover. The 301135 mounts to the wall and sends out signal from it's face. It should be mounted facing the area you need to cover.

How many floors are covered?

An internal antenna will only cover a single floor. To cover multiple floors you will need an internal antenna on each floor. If you need to cover multiple floors please use an add-on antenna kit.

How does a repeater work?

Cell phone amplifiers improve cell phone reception by filtering cellular signals and amplifying them. An outside antenna is installed where signal is strongest, usually up on the roof or high exterior wall. This antenna is used to send and receive signals from the nearest cell phone tower. The received signal is transferred through a cable to an amplifier unit, which filters the signals, amplifies them, and then transmits them via cable to an internal antenna. The internal antenna rebroadcasts the amplified signal. By using a cell phone amplifier, you can achieve full bars on your phone in an area where you previously had no reception.

Installation of the Wilson Custom kit

Although you can customize this Wilson kit, the installation procedure is very similar

Here is a diagram of a typical installation:

External Antenna

The external antenna is placed outside the building, where the signal strength is the strongest. For optimal performance it should be placed on the roof, but it can also be installed on the building's awning or outside a window. If you have a yagi antenna then you will have to setup the kit, then rotate the antenna slowly to find the best direction. All Wilson antennas mount to a pole, and we have a pole mount accessory kit if you don't already have one you can use.

Coax Cable

There are 2 coaxial cables in a typical kit. One cable transmits signal between the external antenna and the main amplifier, and the other between the main amplifier and the internal antenna.

Main amplifier

The main amplifier is the only part of the kit which requires power. It can be placed anywhere in your home or office.

Indoor Antenna

This antenna rebroadcasts amplified cellular signals inside your building. You can choose between ceiling mount or wall mount.

RepeaterStore.com Expert Review

The Wilson Custom kit is perfect for people who need to tailor their repeater kit to their exact situation. With the Wilson Custom kit you can choose the amplifier, cable and antennas needed to make the perfect system. The amplifiers available range from the 801245 SOHO, capable of covering around 3,500 sq ft, and the 801280 AG PRO 75, capable of 15,000 sq ft. The choice of external antenna can affect the performance of the system. Yagi antennas provide the best signal gain. However they can only receive signal from 1 direction (or 2 directions with the dual kit). They are only therefore suitable if you are receiving signal from 1 (or 2) networks, or the network's share towers or towers in the same direction.

Due to it's customization, the Wilson Custom is suitable for any home or office environment.
